When to Throw Away Makeup
Simple signs that your lipstick, mascara, or foundation has gone bad.
Makeup does not last forever. Preservatives weaken over time, and each use introduces air, light and bacteria from fingers and applicators. Knowing when to let a product go protects both your skin and your eyes.
Typical lifespans after opening
Mascara and liquid eyeliner: about 3 months. Liquid foundation and concealer: 6–12 months. Lipstick and lip gloss: 12–24 months. Powders, blush and eyeshadow: up to 24 months. Always check the PAO symbol on the pack, since the manufacturer's guidance takes priority over general rules.
Warning signs
Throw away a product if its smell, color or texture changes, if it separates and won't mix back together, if it becomes dry, clumpy or watery, or if it causes stinging, redness or irritation. When in doubt, throw it out.
Eye products need extra care
Mascara and liquid eyeliner are used right next to the eyes and the wand goes back into the tube every time, which makes contamination more likely. The FDA advises against adding water or saliva to revive dried mascara, and recommends discarding eye products after an eye infection.
Check before you buy
Products can sit in warehouses or on shelves for a long time. Decoding the batch code before you open a product, especially one bought from a discounter or a reseller, tells you how much of its shelf life is already used up.
